PROBATION junior TEAM
Abstract: With the first number of the journal we like to thank every single person who made this project real, especially to Marian Preda, the dean of Sociology and Social Work Faculty from Bucharest University, for his non-conditioned support. We strongly believe that Youth in the Justice is a very powerful resource in the shaping a new justice system and so, we encourage new and innovative ideas. With this first number we salute the initiative of the five (5) first young people who express themselves in the following articles What is the meaning of Logotherapy, Mediation in Probation Arena, The Relationship between the Probation Officer and the Parolee, Human Trafficking Victims in the Probation System, Reintegrating Young Inmates in Workforce and Mental Health in Prison. All this subjects release a new potential recommendation to change pressing issues currently in the justice system.

Book Review: Man’s search for meaning

Abstract:
“Man’s search for meaning” by Viktor Frankl is more than an introspection into a tragic past, in which Frankl found his meaning. Through the experience as a victim in Nazi’s concentration camps, Frankl is able to develop the logotherapy theory. Called “the third Viennese school of psychiatry” Frankl’s theory brings a new light into a man reconstruction through seeking meaning. The book is separated into two parts, one presenting the psychological, social, and emotional implications in being in a concentration camp, and a second part presenting Frankl’s theory of logotherapy. Frankl concludes that every man has a meaning even if he is not aware of that, and every man is predestinated to create great things.

Victim. Restorative justice. Mediation

Abstract: Seen as a “fashionable” process , recommended by the Council of Ministers, Restorative Justice is built on philosophical principles that have direct applications in many types of conflicts between members of society. Mediation looks to repair evil perpetrated through the power of communication. If mediators had success in preventing wars, they certainly are prepared to assist in the prevention of serious criminal acts caused from misunderstandings or tension. Restorative justice and mediation fall within the general idea of rejecting indifference, by implication, coming up with solutions, debates; they are part of the vast category of Community Administration of Justice which transitions crime from a victim’s injury to a community’s injury. Through this approach we begin to see criminal acts as a social problem that we have to treat. The victim as well as the criminal must be helped not blamed.

The relationship between the probation officer and the parolee in desistance process

Abstract: The article highlights the importance of relationships between probation officers and their parolees with the focus being to maintain non-delinquent behavior as the primary objective for the parolee. The human qualities and the personal development of both participants must be highlighted and emphasized. The analytical speech begins with the evolution and the definition of probation connected to the modern notion of desistance, where the positive aspects of the individual are highlighted and connected with the social opportunities that can sustain a pro-social behavior. Further it describes the profile of the Romanian probation officer, made by the Ministry of Justice through the requests specified in the employee selection process. The development of professional and personal development of a probation officer is complex and is necessary, as a condition for a qualitative relationship between the supervised and the counselor, increasing the chances of positive results having and important impact on the community.

The probation services role in protecting human trafficking victims

Abstract: There is a substantial gap that exists in information respective to human trafficking. This epidemic is not only a national issue but a transnational issue that requires a collaborative and effective approach at all levels of government across all Nations. Social reality requires the idea of coordinating and developing an action plan for cooperation between governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The phenomenon of human trafficking has long exceeded the boundaries of a country or a region, becoming a destabilizing factor of significant proportions and demoralized. Cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination for people today is a prerequisite. Only through joint efforts can be overcome dangers this human scourge. Fortunately, there are national legislation and regulations governing the implementation of this, which are designed to assist victims of violent crimes. These structures provide work at the request of the victim(s); however, it is obstructed by the inefficiency of the Departments of Social Protection.

The social work perspective in reintegrating inmates in work field

Abstract: With this research I intend to evaluate risk factors and the resources of whom depends socio professional reintegration of Gherla Penitentiary’s inmates. In the context of reaching to this purpose, I like to identify the attitude of the employers in what meaning employing an ex-inmate. Also I would like to know, what is the opinion of the inmates regarding the last job and the opinion regarding working in generally. And definably, I like to know what are the intern and extern resources of the inmates in what meaning social reintegration.

Mental health in Romanian prisons

Abstract: Mental illness in Romanian prisons constitutes a serious matter to be addressed. Almost 4,800 out of 34,000 offenders (13%) incarcerated in Romania during 2007 were diagnosed with mental health problems, which means that one out of seven offenders were mentally ill. Unfortunately, despite the alarming data, there are no permanent and professional programs for this category of beneficiaries. Additionally, the multidisciplinary team lacks in providing support. Even if in 2009 the number of incarcerated people decreased, the high number of mentally ill offenders and the absence of programs, developed for this category of people, remain a huge problem.
